Prior to Nasya, a facial oil massage or steam inhalation helps loosen the toxins so they can be removed easily through Nasya. Once Nasya treatment is complete, the patient is asked to gargle with lukewarm water. The patient is made to inhale medicated smoke to complete the procedure.

Types of Nasya

  1. Virechana: In this form of Nasya, dry powders like Brahmi, Jatamansi, and Vacha are blown into the nostrils.

  2. Brimhana: This is a nutritive Nasya that can help treat imbalance in the Vata Dosha. Substances like herbalized ghee and natural oils are used. They help to provide nutrition.

  3. Shamana: Here, fresh juice prepared from herbs or oils to balance vitiation in Doshas are used. Tikta ghee, Brahmi ghee, or Vacha oil may be used.

  4. Navana: This is used for a combination of Doshas, like Pitta-Kapha or Pitta-Vata imbalance. Oils, decoctions, and juices are mixed to administer.
