Importance of Sleep in Ayurveda Sleep is a reversible state of consciousness that provides muscle relaxation. Nearly all the voluntary muscles stop working while sleeping. It is during sleep certain processes like growth and rejuvenation of immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems occur. Less sleep causes mental, emotional and physical fatigue. Sleep debt can also diminish abilities to perform high level cognitive functions. Sleep disorders can cause havoc in life. So it is very important to get a deep and restful sleep. Kerala Ayurveda suggests refraining from stimulants for a sound sleep. A cup of hot milk after dinner can be taken based on the body type. Massage a bit of sesame oil onto the soles of feet before sleeping. Formulations of certain herbs like Brahmi help in promoting sleep. Meditation helps in relaxing at both physical and conscious level. It is always better to correct sleep disorders by modifying lifestyle and food habits. Pranayama Pranayama consists of breathing techniques for proper energy flow in the body. ‘Prana’ means breath and ‘ayama’ means control. As there is focus on breath in these techniques, it helps in proper breathing and circulation of vital energy in the body. This helps in both purification of the body as well as the mind. There are many forms of Pranayama that are suitable for general health and specific disorders, and some of them are seasonal too. The breathing techniques help in mental relaxation and calms the entire system. When practiced with Yoga, it helps in awakwning body, mind and spirit. There are different types ranging from simple and general to complex ones. Nadi Shuddhi, Bhastrika, Brahmari and Kapalabhati are few of the several types. At the body level, Pranayama helps in targeting mainly breathing problems like asthma and bronchitis. It is helpful for reducing blood pressure, maintaining liver health, removal of excess fat and also for blood purification. Commonly, the disease is transmitted by a bite from an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which introduces the organisms into a person’s circulatory system. These protozoans mature and reproduce in the liver. Thus the actual symptoms of this disease is seen only after ten days. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, headache and vomiting, which in severe cases can progress to coma or death. However, malaria is preventable and curable. Diagnosing it during its early stages helps in preventing complications. If not properly treated, it can recur after months. It may even last for months if left untreated. Many prevention and control measures are being taken which has resulted in a drastic reduction of deaths due to malaria. Extreme care has to be taken if babies are suffering from malaria. Pregnant women should also take utmost care if diagnosed with malaria and can pose a serious threat to the baby too. What is Ayurveda’s cure for malaria? There are many remedies for malaria. Taking lemon juice with water thrice a day is one of the easiest remedies for malaria. Black pepper powder and cinnamon powder with honey and water thrice a day helps in lowering the temperature.
